"Elusive Light" - My July exhibition at the Old Main Gallery, Bozeman, Montana

"Bitterroot Storm" is a small 8" x 8" plein-air painting for my July exhibition with a June 28th opening reception at the Old Main Gallery in Bozeman.

"Light is constantly transforming the landscape, never to repeat itself.  As an artist feel a personal challenge to capture this fugitive light that changes day-by-day, minute-by-minute.

When I am able to convey a sense of light that elicits my emotional response to the landscapes’ beauty and majesty, then my creative undertaking has been accomplished.

This exhibition is about intuitively expressing what I see and feel in a visual language that invites you to experience the splendor and magnificence of Montana."

New Small Oil Paintings at Old Main Gallery

I just took five small oil paintings to Old Main Gallery in downtown Bozeman. Some people call these "juicy" oil paintings since I am working wet into wet using a loaded brush (lots of paint in various colors together). Extremely fun and exciting to create.

This is the a painting of the Clark Fork Canyon in the Beartooths and is 8" x 8" oil on canvas panel.

Nicolaysen Art Museum Permanent Collection

"Bridger Mountains-August Storm" was recently purchased by the
The Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper, Wyoming to be included in the museum's permanent collection. I am honored to have my work part of the Nicolaysens collection.

Early evening light has that unique flat light below the shadow line and the dramatic light and shadows above it. The shadows are further enhanced by reflected light from the passing storm. One of those beautiful interactions that keep me painting!

"Bridger Mountains-August Storm" is a 36" x 36" oil on canvas painting.

New Paintings at the Old Main Gallery

I have three new large pastels and a couple new oil paintings at the Old Main Gallery in downtown Bozeman.

Pictured are the Bridgers at sunset from Nixon Gulch just north of Manhattan, Montana. An arid area in the Horseshoe Hills that contrasts the lush growth surrounding the East Gallatin River.

Thunderstorm Season in Montana

"Evening Rain" is one of 10 new small oil paintings I just completed honoring the transition from winter to summer.

I love the dynamic weather during this season, just not the bugs in my paintings!

Missoula Art Museum Ruby Jubilee Art Auction

I am honored to be part of the 2015 Missoula Art Museum's annual art auction. This painting titled "Wise River September" was painted from one of my favorite areas in the Pioneer Mountains near Dillon. The fall colors change quickly in this location and it was exciting to catch it at the peak of autumn colors!

"Wise River September" is an 18" x 18" oil on canvas.

The Ruby Jubilee Art Auction and Dinner will be held Saturday, February 7, University Center Ballroom at the University of Montana.

Yellowstone River-July at the Old Main Gallery

Yellowstone River-July is the first painting I did this summer for an exhibit at the Old Main Gallery. I started it in early July after the wet cool June we had. Lots of snow still but that disipated by the time I finished this painting. I love the contrast of the jagged peaks and the gentle flow of the Yellowstone this time of year.

Bridger Mountains-August at the Old Main Gallery

August was the month of orange sunsets and late season thunderstorms. This is one of my favorite views of the Bridgers with the dynamic rugged beauty of Ross Peak contrasting the accented minmulist lines on Hardscrabble and Sacajawea peaks.  "Bridger Mountains-August" can be seen at the Old Main Gallery  in downtown Bozeman.

Yellowstone National Park

It has been a couple years in the making, but I finally have my Yellowstone greeting card line for sale in Yellowstone National Park!   A pack of five cards specifically tailored for the Park. They are reproductions of my original oil paintings from my spirit animal series.

"My intention with the spirit animal series of paintings goes beyond my love for painting animals. I wanted to present these animals in an engaging intimate format where the eyes are the focal point, a view to the seat of the animal's spirit rather then a traditional approach to the genre of wildlife painting."

On the back of each card you will find interesting informational facts about that animal as well as guidance of what  each animal represents as a spirit guide. Enjoy!

Almost Spring

It's March, the temperatures are slowly warming and I am so over shoveling snow! Although very grateful for the abundant show pack, spring flowers can't come quick enough.

"Foothill Flowers" is one of my all time favorite pastel paintings. Spring in Montana has such intense saturated colors that are a challenge to paint. The fresh, alive hues can come off acrid in a painting, suffocating the beauty of spring. I felt I achieved a harmonious balance in this painting, successfully capturing a lush hillside and the cool soft clouds that are indicative to spring skies.

Foothill Flowers is 20" x 34" pastel on paper.

Missoula Art Museum 42 Annual Art Auction

"Tom Minor Basin" is my entry to the 42 Annual Missoula Museum Art Auction. This event will be held February 01, 2014 at the museum located at 335 North Pattee Missoula, Montana
59802. For more information you can visit the museum's website.

"Tom Minor Basin" is a 30" x 40" pastel painting. This is looking South towards the boundary of Yellowstone National Park on a bright July day with thunderstorms just starting to develop.

Yellowstone Art Museum 2014 Annual Art Auction

I am delighted to have a pastel painting in the live auction and the annual Yellowstone Art Museum Art Auction "Art Auction 46", this event will be held on March 1, 2014.

"Lamar Valley Storm" is a 30" x 40" pastel painting from the Lamar Valley located in Yellowstone National Park. This is a dynamic pastel exhibiting the uniqueness of the medium through the use of many layers of color. I am always surprised how the subtle translucent color layers create a very vibrant relationship that translates the beauty of the light.

The Yellowstone Art Museum is located at 401 N 27th St, Billings, Mt 59101. You can also visit their website auction page.

Pine Shadows-Montana Summer

This is an original plein air oil painting done in August 2013. It was a hot summer morning with bright light and rich color that made for cool shadows and warm direct light. Notice that I am standing in the shadow otherwise I would be drenched with sweat!

This is an 8" x 8" oil on canvas panel that is varnished and ready to place in a frame.

Summer Shadows

The snow is almost all melted in the surrounding mountains, but, the fields are still green and the grasses are starting to ripen. I love it when you get a cool summer breeze with large white puffy clouds casting shadows as they float through the Gallatin Valley.

This pastel painting "Summer Shadows" is 30" x 40".

First Rose

I needed a short break from painting landscapes, just a change of focus. I started painting petunias, daisys, snapdragons and now a rose. This is the first rose I have ever painted, go figure! Because every summer I look forward to picking daily bouquets for Genise.

"First Rose" is a small 8" x 8" oil painting on a canvas panel from my front yard.

First summer blooms are over, now to wait for the second round.
